Study Shows Increases in Youth Baseball and Softball Participation

May 18, 2017

In 2015 Major League Baseball launched their Play Ball initiative and it appears the dividends of that investment are paying off.  According to a study by the Sports and Fitness Industry of America baseball and softball combined are currently the most popular youth team sport.

FoxSports.com dives deeper into the numbers and adds some insight from industry professionals. In the article, Tony Reagins, MLB Senior VP for Youth Programs is over the moon about the results.

“I’ve been in communities all around the country,” Reagins said. “I see kids playing, kids from different communities playing, different backgrounds playing. I had a good sense the number would be better. I just didn’t realize that it would be this good.”

The Baseball-Softball combo saw increases casual play and core play in both the 1-year, 3-year and 5-year metrics of the survey.
